Today was the busiest and most productive day so far. As well as myself and my three regular stars, they had bought two others along to act as bad guys and get shot at. Also, my brother came down to add one more to the cast list.
The problem with the shootout that I scripted, which happens right near the climax of the film, was that it needed a large group of bad guys and at the time I only had three people confirmed to do it – and they also happened to be the three people playing the Soldiers. To a certain extent, that doesn’t matter too much – face coverings and change of wardrobe could hide the fact that they were effectively shooting at themselves. But I really needed more people and even todays extras didn’t make up the numbers enough. The solution was multiple characters for everybody. Three of my friends actually played three separate parts each – one Soldier and two bad guys. It’s a little risky, but there wasn’t too much of an option if I want to keep to the plan of an exciting gun battle.
When the ‘guns’ are being fired, there is nothing being ejected from them, but we are using the sound of the electric motor running inside them as a guide for sound effects and muzzle flashes to be added in post-production. The pistols run on compressed gas held in the magazine allowing them to make a ‘pop’ sound and operate the slide mechanism, as above.
And it’s goodnight to this guy:
All in all, a successful day. There wasn’t enough time to do the whole of the scene so we’ll be using a couple more full days to do that. One of the things that we will have to do next time is the shot in which there is a medium sized explosion which (if all goes to plan) will be a small practical effect enhanced greatly in post-production.
Very soon, I’ll be shooting some of the scenes with the hostage in which will mean I can put some clips together into a ‘trailer’ of sorts. All that the cast have really seen of the footage so far are on the camera screen immediately after shooting and the pictures I’ve been posting here, plus a couple of others so they are very keen on seeing how things look in a finished style and cut together.
Not exactly sure when the next day of production will be but next Sunday is a possibility.
In the meantime, thanks for reading and Happy New Year.
